OUTREACH/YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARY ASSISTANT
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Develop and implements library outreach and service to young adults by collaborating with library co-workers, educators and community agency representatives. Creates an environment where young adults may engage more fully in the resources and services of the library, where they feel comfortable and will be inspired to explore their scholastic and creative potential.
Develop and implements library service outreach to the public of all ages ensuring positive customer service and quality interactions.
Responsible for identifying and interpreting Library user needs; providing reference, readers’ advisory, computer, database and referral services to Library patrons directly. This is a part-time position that requires 29 hours per week. Varied schedules include mornings, afternoons, evenings and Saturdays. Dependability and diligent attendance are required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Formulates goals, plans, and procedures for implementing outreach services in accordance with organizational strategic plan and priorities;
- Presents programs and presentations in a variety of outreach venues;
- Identifies opportunities for community partnerships or promotions in collaboration with co-workers;
- Delivers community outreach services at local schools, senior citizen facilities, businesses, festivals, parades and other organizations;
- Conducts off-site library card registration; provides library materials to designated facilities and locations;
- Provides direct assistance to patrons with basic information regarding use of library materials, equipment, and services;
- Maintains and cultivates contact with schools, teachers, and other professional organizations;
- Makes presentations or speaks to community groups;
- Initiates, plans, and conducts a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by young adults between the ages of 12 and 18, including but not limited to films and special events, reading clubs, and school and community outreach.
- Is part of Children’s department team and provides support and coverage as needed;
- Solicits funds and promotes donations for the summer reading program;
- Composes and submits monthly reports and event statistics;
- Attends professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees; reads professional literature; attends and participates in staff meeting discussions;
- Keeps informed of technological and professional trends and pursues a commitment to professional development and growth;
- Works on library-wide projects;
- Submits online book reviews to the library’s automation system;
- Must hold a valid Tennessee Driver’s License and have access to a personal vehicle for county-wide travel;
- Other duties as assigned.

- Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision;
- Must have good computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Internet, Library software and mobile devices;
- Ability to train patrons in the use of public access catalog, Internet, and other library resources.
- Ability to assist and train patrons of all ages in the use of library e-resources;
- Ability to successfully complete a background check;
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Packing and loading of materials and books will be required;
- Ability to lift and/or move15-70 pounds of material or equipment on a regular basis and driving between library and outreach locations;
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and visual acuity to read computer screen and perform various detailed work.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess a High School Diploma or GED;
- Public library experience is desirable but not required;
- Working knowledge of common computer applications;
- Experience working with children is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
- Has knowledge of current reading, viewing, and listening interests of adults and young adults;
- Ability to translate young adult needs and interests into effective library services and programs;
- Knowledge of current trends in library services for young adults and young adult literature and other materials for youth;
- Knowledge of standard library procedures, current information technology, Internet and database search capabilities;
- Communicate with others, orally and in writing; correspond often through email;
- Handle a sizable number of young people simultaneously, with skill;
- Work with young adults of varied backgrounds, ages, and abilities;
- Effectively read and understand information contained in memoranda, reports, and bulletins, etc.
- Ability to comprehend and follow instruction from supervisor, verbally and in written form;
- Calculate basic arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) without the aid of a calculator;
- Set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS
- Inside/Outside work environment;
- Flexibility to work hours including frequent evening and weekend hours;
- Flexibility to substitute when staff shortages arise.
EQUIPMENT USED
Computer terminal, library automation system, calculator, copy machine, fax
machine, printer, software programs, microfilm/fiche reader, change machine, telephone,
cash register, printing equipment, audiovisual equipment, motor vehicle, and other equipment as added or required.
WAGE AND BENEFITS
Employees are paid on a bi-weekly basis. The position is probationary for six months and non-probationary afterwards.
Hours: 29 hours per week

$12.00 per hour.
